THR Surgery of Hip Slipped Epiphysis in A Maine Coon Cat — Dr. Shu Lei from Wuhan

WuhanDr. Shu Lei2023-12-26 127

Breed: A Maine Coon cat, 1.8-year-old, male, 8.3kg.

In the past year, the owner felt that the cat's temper had become increasingly bad, making it prone to anger, biting people, inactive, lying down for a long time, and didn't allow touching the hindquarters. The owner thought it was because the cat was sensitive due to being sent to the hospital for surgery when it was young, and tried several times to bring the cat to the hospital for examination, but gave up because the cat was unusually sensitive, which could lead to an increased stress reaction. The cat was later lured into the cardboard box and brought to the hospital to implement the examination after anesthesia. Palpation showed obvious friction sounds in the hip joints of the hind limbs, and subsequent DR showed obvious slipped epiphysis in the bilateral hind limbs. After discussing with the owner, we decided to perform the THR surgery, starting with the more sensitive limb on the left side and replacing the other limb one month later.

A detailed surgical plan was developed for the cat by using BlueSAO iBlueVet, the orthopedic planning software for precise preoperative planning, then, a new artificial joint was replaced with BlueSAOMicro and Nano Replacement System for the cat. We used the φ12m cup and 4# stem, and φ 8mm (+0), φ 8mm(+2) and φ 8mm(+4) heads were prepared on stand during the surgery.

Preoperative X-ray:

Four preoperative X-ray films were taken, including pelvic AP, pelvic LAT, femoral AP, and femoral LAT.
